Physical Therapy as Wellness and Preventative Care

Everyone knows that Physical Therapy is often recommended in the case of acute injuries. But, as Talya Minsberg argues in this NYTimes article, “physical therapists aren’t just for sports injuries or post-surgical care — they can also help you develop a routine to prevent injury or improve your mobility.”

So outside of injury and post-surgery care, what can PT help with here in Austin?

Our experience tells us, and the NYT states: “For chronic injuries, like tendinitis, a physical therapist can help identify the cause of your recurring issues and create a plan to improve your strength or mobility. If you have a nagging injury or any pain or discomfort that affects your daily activities, it can be a good first step to seek out a physical therapist.”

For example, after her migraines were fully managed through Physical Therapy here at MBP, our patient care coordinator continued physical therapy with a special focus on hip rotation. She found this very helpful in preventing injury and keeping her body strong and well prepared for the vigors of training and performing as a professional modern dancer. As another example, our own Dr. Ivonne was able to use PT to prevent pain and injury while training for a 10k. You can read more about how she did it here.

Convinced yet?

Say you decide that you want to start Physical Therapy in order to establish wellness, keep your body feeling good, treat a chronic condition, and/or prevent injury — how do you know if a Physical Therapist is a good one?

The NYTimes suggests that “a good physical therapist should spend a lot of time with their clients” and says that “you should not be quickly passed off to a rehab attendant or aide, and you should have quality one-on-one time — at least 15 minutes — with your physical therapist at each session.”

15 minutes? That's nothing! Treatment sessions here at Mind Body Physio are an hour long and always 1-on-1 with your Physical Therapist. We think that level of quality time is a real investment in our patients and their goals. If you find it difficult to decide between an in network or out of network Physical Therapy clinic, check out these reasons to go out of network. We find that it is the best way for us to provide the personalized care that our patients in Austin deserve.

We offer free 15 minute phone consultations. These calls are a great opportunity for you to ask us questions and get more information about what we do and for us to get to know you. Feel free to book one here.
