Will I have to do my PT exercises forever?

So what’s the deal? You have progressed through your plan of care and your pain/symptoms are down. Will you have to keep doing Physical Therapy exercises forever to continue feeling good? Here’s our take:

Our end goal is not for you to have to do multiple exercises everyday for the rest of your life. It is to get your body to a place where you can do the things you want to do. We are helping you retrain your body, its alignment, and its movement patterns. And then helping you maintain that! So that even throughout the day, while doing daily tasks, your body is practicing what we are teaching it.

So what does that look like?

Initially you will have to practice new movement patterns more - as in, you will need to do your exercises frequently. As your brain and body learn and practice your new movement patterns, they will become more natural. We are teaching certain muscles to activate more and other muscles to release more. Over time your brain will learn how to accomplish these things without you having to think about it as much.

Maybe you get to the point where you only have to do your exercises a couple times a week. Maintenance will look different for different people. For many, it looks like having some exercises up your sleeve to help keep your body feeling good and in alignment.

For example, maybe you do a few exercises as your warm up at the gym. Or maybe you do some exercises a few times a week as a way to reset your alignment. And if any symptoms start to flare up you do them a bit more to help re-stabilize your body. Many patients come in once a month to check in with their PT. During the visit, their PT evaluates their alignment, checks in with them about their symptoms, and makes any necessary adjustments to their home exercises.

Because a lot of our patients who have completed their plan of care like to come in once or twice a month for a tune up / check in, we offer a Mind Body Membership. Our membership is designed to help support our patients long term with their health, wellness, and fitness goals. We are invested in the sustainable well being of our patients!

At our clinic, we have an awesome gym that allows us to help our patients progress and to set and reach new goals. Check out some photos of our gym set up below!

While many patients improve and progress quickly, our goal is not to filter people through. We establish relationships and are truly committed to improving the quality of our patients’ lives.
